Language across the Curriculum

Day 4: 11th October 2014
Session 2: 11.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.
Slot: Language across the Curriculum
Tutor: Mr Chris

Classroom Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, students will have learnt:

  • The different language features used in CLIL subjects
  • To identify language features in sentence
  • To be aware of our own language use in our subject areas
Suggested Activities

Task 1: Information Gap Activity (For Students)

1. Student A and student B are given two similar worksheets where some information is missing from both the worksheets.
2. They need to ask each other for the missing information.

Learning Outcomes

This activity is simple and suitable for all students. Even the shy students can participate in this activity. At the end of the activity, all the students are able to fill in the gaps. They can check their answers on their own without the teacher’s assistance.

Task 2: My Personal Language Audit

Students were asked:

1. What language areas of English do you enjoy and find easy
2. Why do you think they are easy for you?
3. What areas do you find difficult

They were told to choose three areas they wanted to improve on. They had to write down how they were going to practise these areas.

Teaching tips

Look into websites for more help.

For example: (Breaking) News English.

Reflection

This lesson was useful because it made teachers realise the areas they found difficult to teach. We have to be aware that CLIL subjects employ a wide range of language items. Students have difficulty with some of these, particularly verb forms. Raising awareness of your own language issues can sensitise you to your students’ needs.
